The songs listed on the virtual MP3 player to the right were all recorded, mixed and mastered in a basement "studio" that modern technology allowed me to cobble together, here at Chez Nims. I'm still amazed at the audio quality of the music even this rudimentary setup has allowed me to create.
A couple of nice moments happened, during the recording of "Time of Parting".
For one, I was reunited musically with my long-time friend and former bandmate, De Stewart. That's De, harmonizing with me on the title track. The two of us hadn't sang together in over a decade, when I called him up one day and asked if he'd be interested in laying down a vocal track for a new song I'd written. He was...and he did. It was great, playing off De's pristine voice after so many years. Thanks, li'l buddy.
Even more satisfying was working with my son, Jason. He and I co-wrote "It's A Beautiful Sound". Jason also plays rhythm guitar and sings the majority of the lead vocals on this song. (I was stunned by how much he sounds like me. Poor kid.) Oh, yeah. That's him playing the trumpet solo, as well.
I am the world's luckiest father. Having been a freelance writer since the mid-1980s, working out of a home/office, I enjoyed the incredible experience of watching my son grow up almost 24/7, since he was born in 1986. Doing so was amazing when he was young, but it's become even more satisfying seeing him transition from boy to young man, over the past few years. Jas is more than my son; he's my best friend. We share such diverse interests as comic books, computers, space exploration (And, yes, he IS a rocket scientist; the boy obviously inherited his mother's intelligence.), college football and basketball, Cincinnati Reds baseball, a sardonic sense of humor, and now...music. What more could a father ask for?
"It's A Beautiful Sound" was Jason's and my first musical collaboration. I suspect it won't be our last.
Anyway, there's a little behind-the-scenes glimpse into how "Time of Parting" came about. To hear a specific song, click on its title. Or, select the Play button at the top of the player, sit back, relax, and listen to the entire CD.
