"Music in the Key of Friends"

 Jack Nimersheim

Music is, by its very nature, a collaborative process. With few exceptions...insert kudos to Todd Rundgren, here...every song you've ever heard, or ever will hear, reflects the creative efforts of many individuals.

Truth to tell, this is one of the joys of being a musician. Magic happens, whenever two or more inspired musicians get together and start writing or playing music. I suspect it's function of the square: Put two musicians together, and you'll get four times the magic; three musicians equals nine times the magic; four musicians, sixteen; and so on, up the mathematical (and musical) scale. When you play a CD, or drop a needle on old vinyl, you truly are experiencing squared pegs jamming into a round whole!

A roomful of musicians can generate a heck of a lot of magic. Trust me. I've heard it happen.

In today's world, the rooms in which musicians gather need not even be physical locations. Thanks to a different type of magic, the technological "magic" of the Internet, it's now possible to record collaboratively with musicians from around the globe, without leaving the relative comfort of your own home. I won't go into how this technological magic works; one could write a book on the subject. I will suggest, however, that the musical magic still emerges, even when your collaborators are an ocean (or two) away.

I wrote or co-wrote the twelve songs on this CD. The songwriters and musicians who helped transform seminal ideas into completed recordings live in six countries, spread over three continents. Most of us have never met, in person. Someday, hopefully, we will. If nothing else, this possibility provides a good excuse to become a world traveler, in my approaching "golden" years!

Regardless of whether or not we ever share the same physical space, we'll always share the amazing experience of having come together, in various combinations, to create this "Music in the Key of Friends".

Enjoy...
