  JACK NIMERSHEIM

  Author, Futurist, Computer Consultant

On-Line Fiction

I've been lucky. In a relatively short-lived phase of my career during which I concentrated on writing fiction almost exclusively, I managed to publish three collections, a couple dozen short stories, and have my literary "minorpieces" appear in over twenty original anthologies from major science fiction publishers.

I was also nominated for several prestigious awards, including:
  • John W. Campbell Award for Best New Science Fiction Writer
  • Nebula Award (Preliminary Ballot), Short Story, “Moriarty by Modem
  • HOmer Award, Short Story, “Moriarty by Modem
  • Sidewise Award, Short Story, “The Rising Sun at Dusk
  • HOmer Award, Short Story, “The Rising Sun at Dusk
Even the reviewers and my fellow SF writers took notice of my fictional skills (pun intended):
  • "[Nimersheim] deals provocatively with his characters." - Locus Magazine
  • "Jack Nimersheim will be writing well received science fiction for years to come." - Mike Resnick
  • "...invariably clever and ingenious; writes himself out of impossible corners." - Dragon Magazine
  • "...one of the best short-story writers in the business." - Rob Sawyer
  • "[Nimersheim] breathes life into a story." - Rambles Cultural Arts Magazine

This page includes links to a few of my favorite stories.

Click on a title in the following list to read the corresponding story, on-line.

"Petit Mal" — First appeared in Diagnosis: Terminal, Forge Books, ed. by F. Paul WIlson.

"Algorithm & Blues" (written with Nick DiChario) — First appeared in Graffiti from the Subways of My Mind, Farthest Star Books.

"Moriarty by Modem" — Ask me if I'm proud of this one, which appeared in Mike Resnick's 1995 anthology, Sherlock Holmes in Orbit, from DAW Books. It missed by one vote making the 1996 Hugo Awards ballot. It did receive enough votes to appear on the preliminary ballot for the 1996 Nebula Awards and also appeared as a finalist for the 1995 HOmer Award.

"2101: A Space Oddity" — First appeared in Alternate Worldcons, Again, WC Books, ed. by Mike Resnick.

"The Maddening Time" — First appeared in Something Old, Something New..., Farthest Star Books.

"One for the Road" — First appeared in Aladdin, Master of the Lamp, DAW Books, ed. by Mike Resnick and Martin H. Greenberg.

"Mind Over Matter" — First appeared in Alternate Warriors, Tor Books, ed. by Mike Resnick.
